Introducing the Fiji Indian Girmit Ancestry Explorer: A Groundbreaking AI Assistant for Tracing Ancestors

I'm pleased to announce the release of v1.0 of an AI-powered assistant, the Fiji Indian Girmit Ancestry Explorer. This tool is designed to assist the descendants of Fiji Indian Girmityas in uncovering details about their ancestors. It represents a significant advancement in connecting individuals with their rich Indo-Fijian heritage.

A Journey of Data and Discovery

The genesis of the Fiji Indian Girmit Ancestry Explorer was an extensive process of data compilation and curation. Our initial focus was on the public records of Girmityas during the period between 1879 and 1916. We mapped this information to ship arrivals, resulting in a dataset of over 29,000 records.

Addressing the Challenges of Data Accuracy

One of the most crucial aspects of this project was the cleaning and validation of data. We invested significant effort in this phase to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information. Our usage of OpenAI for advanced data analysis played a key role in identifying any discrepancies or outlier data that required further investigation.

Presenting the Beta AI Chatbot

At the core of our project is the beta AI chatbot, developed using ChatGPT 3.5 Turbo. This interface allows users to conduct searches using specific details such as name, father's name, ship, and boarding pass number. Our aim is to provide an intuitive and accessible platform for those seeking to connect with their ancestral past.

Acknowledging the Scope and Limitations

Historical records indicate that a total of 60,965 passengers left India for Fiji, but only 60,553 (including births at sea) arrived. Our current dataset, therefore, potentially reflects only about half of the actual arrivals in Fiji. We are aware of this limitation and are actively seeking ways to access the remaining data to provide a more comprehensive picture.

Future Growth and the Path Ahead

This project is an ongoing journey, and we anticipate expanding and refining our dataset and AI application over time. We understand there may be initial challenges, such as data availability and server response times. Your patience and support as we enhance our app and data are greatly appreciated.

Invitation for Collaborative Efforts

In the spirit of community and shared heritage, we invite collaboration from those who can contribute to the growth of the Fiji Indian Girmit Ancestry Explorer. Whether you have relevant data, insights, or resources, your involvement can significantly enrich this endeavor.
